Service Description
Sinusitis occurs when the sinuses become inflamed, causing pressure, pain, and congestion. Swelling of the sinuses is usually caused by an infection. It is common and often clears up on its own within four weeks, but medication can help if symptoms persist. Symptoms: Sinusitis often follows a cold or flu. Common symptoms include: Pain, swelling, and tenderness around the cheeks, eyes, or forehead Blocked or runny nose Reduced sense of smell Green or yellow mucus from the nose High temperature (fever) Other symptoms may include: Headache Toothache Bad breath Cough Feeling of pressure in the ears Snoring and nasal-sounding speech Young children may also be irritable, have difficulty feeding, and breathe through their mouth. Self-care tips for mild sinusitis: Get plenty of rest Drink plenty of fluids Take painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen (avoid aspirin for children under 16) Avoid allergy triggers Avoid smoking Use a saline (salt water) nasal spray or rinse When to see a pharmacist: If you think you have sinusitis If your child is aged 12 years or older and you suspect sinusitis Pharmacists can provide the same treatments as a GP and offer advice or refer you to other healthcare professionals if necessary.
