Service Description
Middle ear infections are very common, especially in children, and often improve on their own within three days. Symptoms: Ear infection symptoms usually develop quickly and may include: Ear pain (earache) High temperature (fever) Difficulty hearing Discharge from the ear A feeling of pressure or fullness in the ear Itching and irritation in and around the ear Scaly skin in and around the ear Young children and babies may also: Rub or pull their ear Not respond to some sounds Be irritable or restless Have a reduced appetite Experience balance problems Most ear infections clear up within three days, though symptoms can sometimes last up to a week. Care advice: If you or your child have a high temperature or feel unwell, stay at home and avoid contact with others until feeling better. Use painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen (avoid aspirin in children under 16). Remove any ear discharge by gently wiping with cotton wool. When to see a pharmacist: If your child is aged 1 to 17 years and you suspect an ear infection, consult a pharmacist. Pharmacists can provide the same treatments as a GP and offer advice or refer you to other healthcare professionals if needed.
